Letter No. 03

To the woman who is still soft

Softness was never the problem. The work is learning where your softness is safe.

Somewhere you were told, directly or by watching what happened to other soft women, that softness gets used against you. That it reads as weakness to the wrong people, as an opening to the wrong situations. So you learned to armor it. To keep the tenderness in reserve, deployed only where it couldn't cost you anything.

That wasn't wrong of you. It was accurate. There are people who will take softness as an invitation and places that will treat it as a liability. You were not wrong to notice that. But noticing it taught you a second, quieter lesson that isn't true: that softness itself is the risk, rather than the place you put it.

Softness is not a flaw to be managed. It is a capacity, one of the truest ones you have: to feel things fully, to stay open when closing would be easier, to meet people without armor first. The question was never whether to have it. The question is where it belongs.

Here is the practice: this week, notice the difference between softness that is met and softness that is spent. Softness that is met comes back to you, changes something, is received the way you offered it. Softness that is spent disappears into someone who was never going to hold it carefully, and you're left depleted and telling yourself you shouldn't have bothered.

You don't have to stop being soft to protect yourself. You have to get better at reading the room before you open. That discernment, not hardness, is the actual skill. Save your softness for the people and places that know what to do with it. Everywhere else, you're allowed to simply hold it back, quietly, without apology and without becoming someone harder than you are.
